In last night’s meeting of “The Council of Dudes” a men’s group I facilitate. The topic of group think came up. After the meeting “Coincidentally” in @jamesclear book “Atomic Habits” I read about an experiment in 1950 by psychologist Solomon Asch.
In this experiment a subject was in room full of actors, unbeknownst to them. The group was shown one card with a line on it and then a second card with a series of lines.
Each person was asked to point out the matching line. As the amount of actors grew in the group the subject answers started to shift. The subject would agree with the group’s answers. Despite knowing that the choice was incorrect.
As we head into a weekend that is marked in history by a man who stood up for what he believed in. Find an opportunity to speak your truth, stand up for what you believe in and not conform to what the group and not conform to social norms.
No matter what your views are. But don’t be a d*ck about it.
